Definition: LLM - Large Language Model. The acronym entered the popular lexicon around 2022, following OpenAI's release of Dall-E and ChatGPT.

INTRODUCTION

At the core of LLMs lies the ambition to mimic human-like text processing, enabling machines to read, comprehend, and respond to human language in a coherent and contextually relevant manner.

Simply put, a large language model (LLMs) is a type of model that uses deep learning to process natural language and learn relationships between words, phrases and sentences - often trained on large datasets from various sources, such as books, articles, websites, and scripts.

In this blog post, we will kickstart our journey with a glimpse into some "Key Concepts" that form the bedrock of LLMs—don't worry if they don't all click right away, we'll circle back to them as we progress.

Next, we'll explore the ‘History’ that set the stage for their evolution and finally dive into the basic mechanics of how LLMs work. A deeper awaits in Part 2 of this series.

5 QUICK IMPORTANT CONCEPTS

(1) Tokenisation

Tokenisation is the process of breaking down text into smaller pieces, called tokens. These tokens can be as small as characters or as long as words. This is the first step in preparing text for use in machine learning and NLP tasks.

By converting text into tokens, we transform the messy, unstructured text data into a structured format that's easier for models to learn from.

(2) Word Embedding

Embeddings are a type of word representation that allows words to be represented by dense vectors where a vector represents the projection of the word into a continuous vector space. One of the significant advantages of Word Embeddings is their ability to capture semantic relationships between words. For instance, vector operations can capture relationships like "King" - "Man" + "Woman" ≈ "Queen".

(3) Attention Mechanism

The Attention Mechanism is a technique used in neural networks to prioritise certain parts of the input data, enabling the model to focus on different sections of the input sequentially rather than processing the entire input at once.

It helps models to handle long sequences of data efficiently, making it crucial for tasks like translation - for example, in machine translation, when translating a sentence from English to French, the attention mechanism helps the model focus on one word at a time, finding the corresponding translation.

(4) Size and Scalability of LLMs

The "size" of an LLM typically refers to the number of parameters it has. A parameter is a part of the model that's learned from the training data. Larger models, with more parameters, can often learn more complex patterns in data, but they also require more data to train effectively and are more computationally intensive.

GPT-4, one of the largest LLMs, boasts 175 billion parameters, enabling it to learn and generalise across a vast array of topics and tasks.

(5) Transfer Learning

Transfer Learning is a machine learning strategy where a model trained on one task is adapted for a second related task. It's a powerful way to leverage pre-existing models (that might have been trained on vast datasets) for new tasks where data might be scarce, saving time, computational resources, and achieving better performance even with less data.

A good example is BERT, a pre-trained language model, which can be fine-tuned to perform various NLP tasks such as sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, and more, showcasing the versatility of transfer learning.

HISTORY

1950s - 1960s: Early NLP

The infancy stage of Natural Language Processing (NLP) during the 1950s and 1960s was marked by the development of rule-based systems. The premise was straightforward: encode linguistic rules into machines to make sense of text. Initial models operated on formal grammars (a set of rules defining the structure of a language), with the main challenge being the “disambiguation of linguistic constructs” or in simple terms, clarifying meanings of words based on context.

Although these systems could perform basic tasks such as syntax parsing (analysing the structure of sentences) and text generation based on predefined rules, they lacked the ability to generalise across varied linguistic patterns and truly grasp context.

As the field navigated through these early challenges, several notable figures and pioneering projects emerged, significantly impacting the trajectory of NLP

1. Noam Chomsky: A prominent linguist, philosopher, and cognitive scientist, Chomsky introduced the Chomsky Hierarchy and the concept of generative grammar, which had a profound impact on computational linguistics and the development of NLP.

2. Joseph Weizenbaum: In the 1960s, Weizenbaum developed ELIZA, one of the earliest examples of a natural language processing program. ELIZA could simulate conversation and showcased the potential of machines in language-based interactions.

3. IBM's Shoebox: In the early 1960s, IBM demonstrated the Shoebox machine at the World's Fair, which could recognise spoken digits and a limited set of words, marking an early endeavour into speech recognition.

1997: Birth of LSTM, Neural Networks

The year 1997 marked a significant milestone in the NLP realm with the introduction of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks by Sepp Hochreiter and Jürgen Schmidhuber. LSTMs were designed to address the vanishing gradient problem (a challenge in training deep neural networks where gradients of loss function tend to become very small) that plagued traditional Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs, a type of neural network well-suited for sequence data), thus enabling the handling of long-term dependencies in sequential data—a crucial aspect for processing language.

LSTMs brought a novel architecture into the foray, embedding a memory cell and three multiplicative gates—namely the input, output, and forget gates—to govern the flow of information. This allowed LSTMs to capture long-term dependencies in sequential data - recognising relationships between elements spaced far apart in a sequence - which is key for processing language.

By mitigating the vanishing gradient snag, LSTMs could facilitate the back-propagation (a common algorithm for training neural networks) through time training algorithm, allowing for deeper and more complex neural networks.

2003-2013: Word Embeddings

The period between 2003 and 2013 marked the emergence of word embeddings. Techniques like Word2Vec, introduced by Mikolov et al. in 2013, and GloVe (Global Vectors for Word Representation), introduced by Pennington et al., re-defined how words were computationally represented.

Moving away from treating words as discrete symbols, word embeddings situated words in continuous vector spaces (mathematical spaces where words are mapped to vectors of real numbers), thereby capturing semantic relationships and similarities between them efficiently.

This transformation enabled the encoding of semantic relationships in a way that machines could understand, such as the famous example:

This period also marked a shift towards distributed representations, a method where each word is represented by a set of values (or coordinates) across many dimensions, instead of being represented as a single point. By taking this approach, dimensionality of text data was significantly reduced (lowered the number of features needed to represent text), making the handling of large datasets much more effective. In simpler terms, instead of representing a word using a huge sparse matrix (where most values are zero), distributed representations allow us to represent words in a more compact and dense form, making computations less resource-intensive.

Word embeddings in turn alleviated some challenges associated with traditional text representation techniques like Bag-of-Words (BoW) - a representation technique that counts the occurrence of words within a document - or TF-IDF (Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency) - a technique that reflects how important a word is to a document in a collection or corpus - which often resulted in sparse (mostly zero values) and high-dimensional (many features) representations.

This transition helped lay a solid foundation for the development of more advanced NLP (Natural Language Processing) models, including Large Language Models (LLMs)

2014: Sequence-to-Sequence Model

The year 2014 witnessed the inception of sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) models, pioneered by researchers Ilya Sutskever, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le.

These models were meticulously engineered to handle sequences of data, both as input and output, marking a significant departure from previous models that were constrained by fixed-size input and output spaces.

A Sequence-to-Sequence model essentially consist of two recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures, comprising two primary components: an encoder and a decoder. The encoder processes the input sequence and compresses the information into a fixed-length context vector, which encapsulates the semantic essence of the input. The decoder, on the other hand, utilises this context vector to generate the output sequence. This bifurcation facilitates the model's ability to handle variable-length input and output sequences (sequences with different lengths), for example :

By employing attention mechanisms (which allocate varying degrees of importance to different parts of the input sequence), these new models could focus on different parts of the input for different words in the output sequence, somewhat akin to how humans pay attention to different words when translating a sentence. This development not only showcased the potential in processing language data but also set the stage for future advancements, including the Transformer architecture.

2018: Attention is all you need

In 2018, the landscape of NLP witnessed a paradigm shift with the introduction of the Transformer architecture, encapsulated in the seminal paper, "Attention is All You Need" by Vaswani et al. This paper was both a revelation and a departure from conventional sequence processing models like RNNs and LSTMs.

At the heart of the Transformer architecture lies the Attention Mechanism, which challenged the sequential processing of data and offered a more parallel approach. Unlike its predecessors, the Transformer could process all words in a sentence in parallel, significantly reducing training times without sacrificing accuracy.

The Attention Mechanism empowers the model to focus on different parts of the input text when generating an output, similar to how humans pay attention to different words when comprehending a sentence. It weighs the importance of different parts of the input, allowing for a more nuanced understanding and handling of long-range dependencies in text.

For example, in the sentence "The cat sat on the mat", when translating this sentence, the attention mechanism helps in associating "cat" in English to its corresponding word in the target language, say, "gato" in Spanish.

UNDERSTANDING LLMs:

Architecture of LLMs

Large Language Models (LLMs) are primarily built on deep neural network architectures, consisting of multiple layers of interconnected nodes or neurons. These layers are stacked on top of each other, with each layer learning progressively more abstract representations of the input data.

• Neural Networks: The foundational building blocks of LLMs, wherein a network of nodes mimics the way human brain processes information.

• Layers: Neural networks in LLMs consist of multiple layers, including input, hidden, and output layers. Each layer transforms the data as it passes through, aiding in the extraction of features and relationships.

• Nodes: The individual computational units in each layer that process the input data, applying mathematical transformations to extract information.

In the realm of Large Language Models, certain architectures have gained prominence due to their efficacy in handling language data:

1 - Transformer Architecture: The Transformer architecture, introduced in the seminal paper "Attention is All You Need" by Vaswani et al. in 2017, has become the backbone of most modern LLMs. Its self-attention mechanism allows it to process input sequences in parallel rather than sequentially.

2 - BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers): BERT revolutionised NLP tasks by pre-training on a large corpus of text and fine-tuning on specific tasks. Its bidirectional context awareness (processing words in relation to all other words in a sentence, rather than in isolation) set new standards for a variety of NLP tasks.

3- GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer): GPT, and its subsequent versions like GPT-3, extend the Transformer architecture to generate coherent text over long passages - having been trained in an unsupervised manner on vast text corpora

Training LLMs

LLMs are trained in one of three ways:

• Supervised Learning: In supervised learning, models are trained on labeled data, i.e., data paired with the correct output, facilitating the model in learning the mappings between inputs and outputs.

  • A prominent example of supervised learning in the context of LLMs is the fine-tuning of models like BERT for specific NLP tasks such as sentiment analysis, where the model is trained on a dataset of customer reviews labeled with positive or negative sentiments.

  • Supervised learning is widely used in many natural language processing applications like spam detection, where emails are classified into 'spam' or 'not spam' based on training on a labeled dataset.

• Unsupervised Learning: Unsupervised learning involves training on unlabeled data, enabling the model to discover patterns and structures within the data on its own.

  • Word2Vec and GloVe are examples of unsupervised learning where models learn word embeddings by analyzing co-occurrences of words in large text corpora without any labels.

  • Unsupervised learning finds its application in topics discovery and document clustering where the model groups similar text documents together based on inherent patterns without prior labelling.

• Semi-supervised Learning: A hybrid approach that utilizes a small amount of labeled data and a large amount of unlabeled data to train models, combining the benefits of both supervised and unsupervised learning.

  • The ULMFiT (Universal Language Model Fine-tuning) approach, where a language model is first pre-trained on a large corpus of unlabeled text data, then fine-tuned using a smaller dataset of labeled data for a specific task.

  • Semi-supervised learning is beneficial in scenarios where obtaining labeled data is expensive or time-consuming, but there is a plethora of unlabeled data available. It’s utilised in various NLP tasks including sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, and more.

PROCESS

1. Pre-training and Fine-tuning:

   • Before being deployed for specific tasks, LLMs undergo a two-step training process: pre-training and fine-tuning. Pre-training involves training the model on a large corpus of text data to learn general language representations. This process might come before the steps you outlined, setting the stage for the rest of the journey.

2. Parameter Updating (Training):

   • The process of adjusting the model's parameters (weights and biases) based on the error or loss during training is critical. This fine-tuning of parameters occurs during the backpropagation step, ensuring the model learns and improves its performance over time.

3. Evaluation and Testing:

   • After the model is trained and fine-tuned, it's crucial to evaluate its performance on unseen data. This evaluation helps to gauge the model's ability to generalize and perform well on the task at hand.

4. Loss Computation:

   • Calculating the loss, the discrepancy between the model's predictions and the actual data, is a pivotal step. It guides the updating of the model’s parameters.

5. Optimization Algorithms:

   • Optimization algorithms like Adam or Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) play a crucial role in adjusting the model's parameters during the training phase, steering the model towards better performance.

6. Hyperparameter Tuning:

   • Selecting the right set of hyperparameters (like learning rate, batch size, etc.) is vital as it significantly impacts the model's learning process and performance.

7. Regularization:

   • Techniques like dropout or L2 regularisation are employed to prevent overfitting, ensuring the model generalises well to unseen data.

Rule 1 of Machine Learning:

No Machine Learning you say?

Diving straight into ML can be tempting, especially with the buzz it has generated. However, ML requires a robust data pipeline, high-quality labels, and most importantly, a clear understanding of the problem.

Anyone with experience working at a large organisation will tell you of the troubles of getting large, high quality usable data - it’s tough! Machine learning thrives on data. While it's possible to repurpose data from one problem for another, simple heuristics can often achieve half the results of a full-blown ML model, but in a fraction of the time. Not only that, often, the initial iteration of a solution doesn't even involve ML.

If you’re finding it tough to take this from me, here is what some of the pioneers of the industry have to say:

Machine learning is cool, but it requires data. Theoretically, you can take data from a different problem and then tweak the model for a new product, but this will likely underperform basic heuristics. If you think that machine learning will give you a 100% boost, then a heuristic will get you 50% of the way there.

It is quite an intuitive approach: if the data suggests simplicity, we shouldn't complicate it with high-level algorithms. Sometimes, the most straightforward approach leads to the most transparent, understandable, and actionable insights.

Norvig's pragmatic approach highlights the practical side of machine learning and a philosophy that I believe has also worked well in large corporation. It's not about the complexity of the model but the quality and quantity of data that feeds into it. A simple model with a wealth of data can often provide more accurate and reliable insights than a complex model starving for data.

7. Geoffrey Hinton, Professor at the University of Toronto.

"Remember that a model is a simplified representation of reality, and the goal is not to make it complex but to make it as simple as possible while still capturing the essence of the problem." - Geoffrey Hinton, Professor at the University of Toronto.

Hinton brings us back to the essence of machine learning, the essence of modelling: representation of reality. The goal is to capture the core of the problem with as much clarity as possible, not to lose ourselves in the intricacies of complex modelling.

Where do you start then?

Heuristics are a good first start but we’ll come onto that later - let’s first start with data. Regardless of whether you’re using simple rules or deep learning, it helps to have a decent understanding of the data. Grab a sample of the data to run some statistics and visualise! Knowing your data is so underrated in data science and machine learning. Understanding your data and gaining the domain knowledge is truly half the battle.

When you have a problem, build two solutions - a deep Bayesian transformer running on multicloud Kubernetes and a SQL query built on a stack of egregiously oversimplifying assumptions. Put one on your resume, the other in production. Everyone goes home happy — Brandon Rohrer

Apply traditional statistical methods directly.

- Correlation

Simple correlations help with figuring out the relationships between each feature and the target variable. Then, we can select a subset of features, with the strongest relationships, to visualise. Not only does this help with understanding the data and problem—so we can apply machine learning more effectively— we also gain better context of the business domain. Sometimes, the interaction between different features can have a significant impact on the target variable. Techniques like pair plots or correlation matrix heatmaps can help visualise the relationships between multiple features simultaneously.

It's crucial to remember that correlations and aggregate statistics can be misleading - for example, variables that have strong relationships can appear to have zero correlation due to non-linear relationships or outliers. This can of course be mitigated by considering Spearman's rank correlation or Kendall's tau as alternatives as well as many other techniques.

- Data Distribution

Visualising the distribution of your data using techniques like histograms or density plots can help you understand the underlying distribution of your data, identify skewness, and spot outliers. This step is vital because the choice of machine learning model and the necessity of data transformation techniques (like normalisation or standardisation) can depend heavily on the distribution of your data.

Choose machine learning over a complex heuristic.

A simple heuristic can get your product out the door. A complex heuristic is unmaintainable. Once you have data and a basic idea of what you are trying to accomplish, move on to machine learning… and you will find that the machine­-learned model is easier to update and maintain.

Kaggle Competition

Kaggle famously hosted the M5 Forecasting Competition - the task: “Estimate the unit sales of Walmart retail goods”. This task was particularly complex for a few reasons:

1 - There were over 30,000 product and store combinations and therefore 30,000+ time-series models to forecast

2- There was a strong hierarchical structure, a product can belong to a department, in a particular store, in a particular state

3- Each time series for sales of each product had varying length.

Now, YES - the top performing models were all “ Pure ML models ”- however, a simple exponential smoothing outperformed 90% of all models.

Exponential smoothing is considered a low-pass filter. It is a technique used in time series forecasting that applies decreasing weights to past observations, with the most recent observations given more weight.

This highlights that sometimes simpler models can be quite powerful, even in the face of complex machine learning algorithms.

Heuristics

Before diving into complex machine learning models, can we solve the problem with simple rules or baseline methods? You'd be surprised how often the answer is yes. Heuristics offer us a reality check against our ambitions. They serve as a robust baseline to compare the performance of our machine learning models against. If a simple rule gives you 80% of the value with 20% of the effort, it's worth asking whether the additional complexity of machine learning is justified.

Heuristics also play a vital role in the early stages of a machine learning project by providing a source of "quick-and-dirty" labels. This approach, known as weak supervision, is invaluable when you don't have the luxury of a large labeled dataset to train your models.

Examples of heuristic approaches include:

• Creating decision rules based on domain knowledge.

• Segmenting data into meaningful groups and analysing the characteristics of these segments.

• Using simple forecasting methods as baselines for time series data, like the naive approach or seasonal decomposition.

Remember, the goal of this in-depth analysis is not just to apply machine learning for the sake of it, but to truly understand the problem, the data, and the context in which they exist. This holistic understanding will guide you in selecting the right approach, whether it's a simple heuristic, a sophisticated machine learning model, or something in between.

So, when should we turn to machine learning? When the simple solutions have been exhausted, when the heuristics start breaking under their own complexity, and when you have sufficient high-quality data that justifies the investment. Machine learning isn't a magic wand—it's a tool in our toolkit, and it's most effective when used judiciously.

Recognition is the acknowledgment we receive for our accomplishments and contributions. It’s the awards, the shout-outs in team meetings, and the congratulatory emails. It’s the pat on the back for a job well done, the acknowledgment of our hard work and dedication.

In fact, recognition is often associated with a monetary reward - the bonus, the pay rise. It’s a way of affirming our efforts and contributions, encouraging us to maintain or elevate our performance levels.

Appreciation is about people. Recognition is about results

It’s a catalyst, propelling us forward, making us feel seen and valued for our achievements. However, it’s also worth reflecting on whether this form of acknowledgment is fostering a genuine sense of fulfilment or merely a fleeting sense of achievement.

Appreciation in the Workplace:

Appreciation, on the other hand, delves deeper. It’s about valuing individuals for who they are, acknowledging their unique qualities, and expressing gratitude for their presence. It’s the genuine thank-you’s, the heartfelt words of gratitude, and the acknowledgment of a person’s inherent worth.

Recognition vs. Appreciation

Balancing recognition and appreciation is fundamental in creating a compassionate workspace. It’s not merely about acknowledging achievements; it’s about valuing the human effort behind them. When goals are unmet, recognition may diminish and arguable so it should. We all want ‘a players’ rather than ‘b players’ in our teams - we want to push ourselves and others to their limit. The key however, is to remember that the inherent effort and struggle still warrant appreciation.

Reflection:

Balance is crucial— a lesson I learned the hard way during my initial stint as a manager. Eleanor, a team member, once pointed out that my messages as a manager were mixed— one moment, I would praise her work, and the next, I would comment on her lack of effort.

Reflecting on this, I realise that I didn’t grasp the nuanced difference between recognition and appreciation. Even if someone doesn’t meet a deadline or achieve the desired results, appreciation for them is still important. Appreciation is about valuing individuals for who they are, while recognition is an acknowledgment of what they’ve accomplished. You can still appreciate someone even if they didn’t hit the deadline or produce the results.

Appreciation in action

Let’s take an example of a team member who has been working diligently on a project but hasn’t met the desired goals. Recognition may be absent due to the unmet goals, but appreciation can still be present. A simple gesture like, “I see the effort and dedication you are putting into this project, and I want you to know it doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you for your hard work,” can make a world of difference. It’s about valuing the journey, the struggle, and the dedication, even when the destination hasn’t been reached.

In another instance, consider a colleague who is going through a personal hardship. They may not have achieved any professional milestones during this period, but a heartfelt message like, “I appreciate your strength and resilience during this tough time. If there’s anything you need, please know I’m here for you,” can convey a deep sense of appreciation for the individual’s presence and character.

The Essence of Human Connection:

It’s about perceiving and valuing individuals for who they truly are, creating a profound emotional resonance that nurtures a sense of belonging and mutual respect.

A touch of kindness, a gesture of love, has never done any harm

While it seemed straightforward, the results from the initial models were far from satisfactory, so I decided to break the problem down. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: In data science, and in many other fields, the way you frame a problem can be the difference between a mediocre solution and a game-changing insight. It's not just about finding answers but asking the right questions. And often, those questions lie in understanding the basic principles that drive the bigger picture.

I once had the privilege of working alongside two incredibly talented project managers on a significant project. Both were given the same task, but their approaches were distinctly different. One of them, let's call him John, was laser-focused on the project's immediate scope. He zeroed in on the essential deliverables, ensuring that the team met the basic requirements and nothing more. As the anecdotes recount, Gauss's teacher tasked the class with adding all numbers from 1 to 100. Gauss, displaying his mathematical brilliance, discerned that adding the first and last numbers, 1 and 100, yielded 101. The same result was true from combining 2 and 99, 3 and 98, and so forth. Gauss's insight revealed that there were precisely 50 pairs totalling 101 within the range of 0 to 100. Much to the surprise of his teacher, Gauss had figured, rather quickly, the answer to the question was simply 5050.

As human beings, we have an innate affinity for order, often adhering to the adage "first things first." However, Gauss demonstrated the advantages of conceiving the end before beginning. In mathematics, this approach is akin to a shortcut—an art form where the destination is envisioned even before the journey begins. Gauss's method mirrors Amazon's philosophy of "working backwards" from a problem, a testament to thinking outside the box.

In our professional endeavors, whether at work or within projects, we frequently plunge headlong into tasks without a clear vision of the final outcome. There exists a pervasive belief that innovation necessitates reinventing the wheel, starting from scratch, adhering doggedly to "first things first." Rarely do we conduct comprehensive literature reviews, browsing resources on the internet or literature, to discern existing solutions. Rather than getting bogged down in the details from the get-go, why not seek out existing solutions or innovative shortcuts?

Gauss teaches us that the key to efficient problem-solving, whether in mathematics or in managing projects, lies in understanding the endgame before making the first move.

"In data science projects, the conventional approach is to kick off with what's known as 'Sprint Zero.' This is where we survey the data landscape, understand its sources, and identify initial challenges. It's a necessary step, but it's also just the beginning.

What if, inspired by Gauss's shortcut method, we also started with a clear vision of the end? Imagine knowing from the outset how your model will be deployed—whether it's in the cloud, accessible via an API like FastAPI, or optimised for batch inference and streaming. This foresight allows you to consider productionisation and monitoring requirements early on, shaping your data collection, model training, and validation strategies accordingly.

By contemplating the endgame, you can reverse-engineer the project's steps, making the entire process more efficient and aligned with the final goal. This 'end-first' approach not only saves time but also ensures that you're building a solution that is truly fit for purpose."

It starts with understanding what the customer truly needs and then reverse-engineering the product or service to meet those needs. This methodology aligns with Peter Drucker's assertion that the ultimate test of an organisation is its ability to create customers. In this framework, each development stage is an opportunity to validate assumptions, allowing for quick pivots or refinements. As Bryar and Carr explain, "The sooner you can validate an assumption, the sooner you can move on to the next assumption or pivot your approach."It's a dynamic, iterative process that minimises waste and maximises customer satisfaction.

On the other hand, the "Build It And They Will Come" approach, while sometimes effective, lacks this foresight and can lead to inefficiencies or even failure if the assumed demand doesn't materialise.

By applying Gauss's wisdom to these paradigms, we can better appreciate the value of starting with a clear end goal, whether it's customer creation or meeting a specific demand, to guide the development process more effectively.

In the movie, four different witnesses recount the same murder from their own perspective, each one presenting a completely different version of what happened. This effect is not just limited to movies; it can be observed in real-life situations where people's subjective experiences influence their interpretation of events.

"We’ve all experienced situations where we get two accounts of the same event, but the versions are dramatically different because they’re informed by different facts and perspectives. This is known as Rashomon Effect, named for the 1950 cinematic classic Rashomon, directed by Akira Kurosawa. The central element of the otherwise simple plot was how incompleteness is a tool for bias. In the film, four people give separate, drastically different accounts of a scene they all observed, the seduction (or rape) of a woman by a bandit, the bandit’s duel with her husband (if there was a duel), and the husband’s death (from losing the duel, murder, or suicide)."

The Rashomon effect is a critical mental model that can help us understand how our perceptions and biases shape our understanding of reality.

If you were born in 1950, the same market went exactly nowhere in your teens and 20s.When everyone has experienced a fraction of what’s out there but uses those experiences to explain everything they expect to happen, a lot of people eventually become disappointed, confused, or dumbfounded at others’ decisions. Keep that quote in mind when debating people’s investing views. Or when you’re confused about their desire to hoard or blow money, their fear or greed in certain situations, or whenever else you can’t understand why people do what they do with money. Things will make more sense."

However, the Rashomon effect can also be a valuable tool for self-reflection. By recognising our own biases & the subjectivity of our understanding of reality, we can become more open-minded and better able to appreciate the perspectives of others.

As S.Niveshak writes, "If we can view the world through the eyes of others, we can gain new insights and see things from a different perspective."

A team member promptly dove into pre-processing the data, analyzing the curves, and exploring k-means clustering. Another colleague experimented with a scipy library to group load profiles based on their peak times and locations.

At that juncture, I was reminded of the ingenuity of Fisher Black and Myron Scholes, who brilliantly adapted the Heat-Diffusion equation from chemical engineering to unravel the complexities of Option Pricing, thereby securing a Nobel Prize in Economics.

Inspired by this interdisciplinary ingenuity, I embarked on a literature review and discovered the technique of using cross-correlation, commonly employed to cluster stock performance in the NASDAQ. From a young age, we yearn to be seen, heard, and valued. It’s about our existence making a ripple in the vast ocean of life. It’s not about ego or vanity but a deep-rooted desire to matter, to make a difference, to leave a mark… our mark.

The tasks thrusted onto me, with little choice, were menial and inconsequential - the project itself was teetering on the brink due to malfunctioning platforms, missing data and poor leadership.

Recognising that the company's success was largely driven by team-based structures, Google sought to understand the elements that constituted effective teams. The project was named after the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, who famously said, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts," suggesting that collective efforts often yield results greater than individual contributions.

Assumptions Underlying the Project:

No work is without its assumption and the Aristotle project was no different - at the outset, there were several assumptions that guided the research. It was hypothesised that certain tangible factors, such as team size, tenure, or educational background, may well play a significant role in team effectiveness. There was also an underlying belief that perhaps the best teams were those that brought together the best individuals. The project aimed to validate or debunk these assumptions by analysing various team dynamics and patterns.

The research showed that the most effective teams possess five critical attributes:

Clear goals are the foundation of a high-performing team. They provide a shared vision and a sense of purpose, and ensure that everyone is working towards the same objective. OKRs (Objectives and Key Results): Another powerful framework is OKRs, where Objectives define what the team wants to achieve, and Key Results are the specific measures used to track the achievement of these objectives. This model promotes alignment and engagement around measurable goals, fostering a sense of accountability and focus within the team.

Psychological safety is a key factor in team success. It refers to the perception that team members can express their thoughts and opinions without fear of retaliation or being judged. Teams that promote psychological safety are more likely to have open and honest communication, and to be more innovative and creative. When team members feel safe to share their ideas, the whole team benefits, and everyone can bring their best work to the table.

Neuroscience shows that such environments reduce the activation of the amygdala, the brain's fear center, and increase the release of oxytocin, the bonding hormone, fostering collaboration and social bonding.

It reduces stress levels and the associated cortisol release, promoting better mental health and reducing burnout. The reliability of team members creates a positive feedback loop; the more a person can rely on their peers, the more secure and open they become, further enhancing the dependability within the team.

4- Structure and Clarity

Structure and clarity provide the roadmap for progress, and help to ensure that everyone is aligned and working towards the same objective. Teams with clear structure and clarity have defined roles and responsibilities, which enables them to divide tasks and allocate resources effectively. This provides a clear line of sight for each team member, and enables them to focus on their work without distractions.

The frog in the pond, content in its limited perspective, is oblivious to the vastness of the ocean. Much like the frog, we often find comfort in the familiar, the predictable, the safe. But what lies beyond the comfort of our ponds? What boundless oceans of possibilities are we missing when we let fear take hold?

Looking back at my own life, I see a path of caution, a journey shaped by a fear of stepping into the unknown. I always played it safe, stuck to what I knew, and in doing so, I can’t help but wonder… what did I miss out on?

It’s a quiet whisper of regret that maybe, just maybe, I let opportunities slip through my fingers because I was too scared to reach out and grab them.

Isn’t this a story many of us share? We’re scared of what we don’t know, of what could go wrong. We crave the comfort, the pat on the back, and so we sideline our dreams, our ambition, our hopes.

And as I sit here, reflecting, I can’t help but think about all the ‘what ifs’, the different stories I could have lived, if only I had dared to venture beyond the familiar, into the unknown.

I was once asked, what is the science in data science. I didn’t know how to answer it … and the only thing that came to my mind was hypothesis testing.As data scientists, we form hypotheses and test them, either proving or failing to prove the null hypothesis, thereby adhering to the scientific method. I knew this answer was lacking depth and even the answer I had given, I’m not sure I really understood. So I decided to study a course on the ‘Philosophy of Science’ at the University of Oxford to really understand the parallels of science, philosophy and data science!
